Hi, Just returned from Freeport 2-19-09 Freeport is basically shut down due to
the extensive hurricane damage to houses and the Royal Oasis hotel which has
been abandoned and there seems to be a lot of doubt as to whether it will ever
be rebuilt due to nervous investors and internal politics. The international
bazaar and straw market are closed and the taxi drivers will not take you
there. Do not despair however as there is plenty for you to do in Lucaya. Taxis
($5) will transport you from Freeport harbour when you get off the ship. There
are a few vendors who set up right at the taxi stand. Port Lucaya Marketplace
has plenty of shops and many of the vendors from the international market have
moved to Lucaya and lots of options to eat. There is also a casino across the
street as well as a beach with public access. Also there is a marina at Port
Lucaya Marketplace which offers glass bottom boat tours as well as fishing,
diving, etc.
