Hi DT,
Your sympatico.ca email address indicates to me that you are in Canada. I, too,
live in Canada.
There are 4 properties there....the Ritz Beach Resort (built in the 90’s), the
Ritz Coral 2 Suites (adjacent to the Ritz Beach Resort and added on in Spring
2002), Flamingo Bay Yacht Club & Marina Hotel (a budget type place), and Taino
Beach Vacation Club (units are older than those of the Ritz). All three
properties are separate buildings within walking distance of each other.
There are often complaints about the Ritz & Taino properties. They are
okay....but you must do your own research, check out the message boards, and
understand exactly what you will be getting by staying there. The biggest
problem is the service from staff. The staff has been reported to be less
friendly and less cooperative than they should be. It is important to note that
you need to be self-sufficient for a stay here and NOT need the service of the
staff. Do NOT expect the same service you would get in a hotel! I will
emphasize that the attitude of the staff is EXTREMELY laid back and, obviously,
this affects the maintenance of the facility. If you're well prepared in
advance and know what to expect, you can have a nice vacation!
There is NOTHING much to do other than the nice beach and TERRIFIC POOL which
is really the highlight of the properties. Bright, colorful tube rafts for
floating around are provided in the pool and the current takes you around like
a "lazy river raft" ride (lots of fun). The pool has a nice water slide (it
ONLY operates from 1-4 pm but sometimes it does NOT operate at all). There is a
swim-up wet bar and a dry section in a cave but sometimes it too is not open.
There is a large jacuzzi but sometimes it is out of order.
The pool is nicely done and visually is really beautiful. However, during the
winter months, when it is only 72 or so degrees, an UNHEATED pool is not very
inviting. It is fine in the summer but they should arrange to heat it during
the winter months when the daily temperature is not as high.
The beach is small but nice, clean and uncrowded
If you want more excitement and better service, I would certainly recommend Our
Lucaya (www.ourlucaya.com) one of the nicer hotel properties on the island
conveniently located across from Port Lucaya Marketplace and right on the
beach.
People who stay at the Ritz or Taino properties have mixed reviews if you read
the postings on the message boards. Some people like it, some people hate it.
The down side of staying at either of these three properties is that there are
NO public buses in the area which can be a nuisance.
You could say that these properties are in somewhat of a remote spot since they
are NOT within walking distance to the nightlife spots in Port Lucaya
Marketplace & Marina and Our Lucaya or the Royal Oasis Golf Resort &Casino and
the International Bazaar!!
There is NO shopping or nightlife within walking distance of the Ritz.
The properties are secluded from the hustle and bustle of the regular tourist
areas, yet just a five minute water ferry ride to Port Lucaya Marketplace.
Behind the Flamingo Bay Yacht Club and Marina Hotel, you can take the water
ferry taxi which leaves every hour on the hour for a five minute ride to Port
Lucaya Marketplace & Marina (about $2-$3 per person per ride). The return ride
to go back to the Taino Beach area leaves ten minutes after the hour on the
hour from the dockside of the Ferry House Restaurant(adjacent to the Pelican
Bay at Lucaya Hotel). It runs from about 8am to 11pm but takes about an hour
off at around noon for lunch. I believe that there is an unlimited ferry pass
for one week which costs about $25.00 per person for guests of the three
properties (but prices may have gone up so it's best to check when you get
there).
After 11 pm your only option to get around the island is by car rental or taxi
(expensive).
A taxi from Our Lucaya/Port Lucaya Marketplace area to the Taino Beach
properties will cost about $12 for 2 people including tip (and then it's $3 for
each additional person).
A taxi from the Royal Oasis Golf Resort & Casino/International Bazaar area to
the Taino Beach properties will cost about $15 for 2 people including tip ($3
for each additional person).
The Ritz Beach Resort is a low rise, long building, three stories high. There
are NO elevators. Accommodations consist of hotel type efficiency units, studio
units, 1 bedroom units as well as penthouse units. The units are have lots of
tile and marble, coral pink marble tiled floors, bevilled glass walls and
tinted mirrors), pillars, lots of mirrors and soft muted, pastel colored
fabrics. Noisy air conditioners in the units and not too much closet space.
There is always some construction going on at the Ritz, as they are constantly
adding to this property.
The Ritz 2 Coral Suites property sits adjacent to the Ritz Beach Resort and is
the newest addition to the Ritz property (Spring 2002). I do NOT know much
about the Ritz 2 Coral Suites as I have only seen the units in the Ritz Beach
Resort building.
You will be somewhat pressured to visit the Ritz's vacation club presentation.
If you are NOT interested, just be firm but polite and stand your ground when
you say "No."
If you need more info. on the Ritz and other general info. on the island such
as restaurants, things to do, weather websites, feel free to email me directly
since it would take too long to post everything here.
Hope this info. helps you out a bit.
best regards
