The responses you have a all valid.
We've been there 7 or 8 times, once with two teen age boys. Some more advice.
Do rent a jeep or SUV.
Most "resorts" have an island road map. I know it is available at Rainbow Inn
and The Cove, and probably others. It is a great map to off the beaten track
beaches. Use it. See all the special places listed on the map. Each day can
be an adventure. I let my two, both 18, venture forth on their own with no
problems. Residents are good folk. Friendly and helpful. Driving suggestion -
BE CAREFUL leaving a stop sign is critical. Each day trip is an adventure.
Take the boys to the caves north of Gregory Town. Bring flashlights. Visit
The Island School near Cape Eleuthera, they like visitors. You may want to
send the boys there for a semester. I'm a just retired school principal and
wish I'd know about the Island School when my kids were in high school. It is
the single greatest, neatest, school I've every seen that takes kids for one
semester, usually in their Junior year. WOW!!! We always pack stuff in a
small cooler. Then buy ice and take our lunches with us with pop/soda. Fresh
plantains from the beach lady and peanut butter sandwiches made on bread from
the bakery in GH or another in Gregory Town are the favorite.
Do visit Harbour Island. There are several dive resorts there. I used
Valentines to give the two boys a scuba lesson in the pool and a shallow water
scuba dive. Reasonbly priced. Great adventure for teens. While they dive, if
you don't go to, walk to the beach. Eat at Ma Ruby's on HI. GREAT
cheeseburgers in a tropical garden. Of course, there is the claim of visits by
Jimmy Buffet - and I think they are probably true at Ma's.
Do take the boys fishing. Paul Petty is a good man and guide. Lots of reef
fish and maybe a bonefish. A less expensive fellow lives in Gregory Town.
Email me for his name and links to bahmas/bonefish sites for general info about
salt water fishing. Do your boys fish? Do the have fishing rods?
In James Cistern, there is a beachfront booth that sells fresh veggies and
fruits. Stop there and stock up. Try the Cove or Rainbow Inn for dinner. In
Pametto Point there is Mate and Jennys, great pizza in an "island" bar.
