Bill,
My wife and I just got back from Eluthera (last night). Wow, that a great
time we had! Our trip was very different from what you'll experience, as it was
just the two of us, and we were celebrating our 25th anniversary. So our focus
was on being by ourselves, and having privacy. Now that you know my
perspective, let me see if I can help answer some of your questions.
We had no problem with any sealife. We're quite used to jellyfish, and
things like that from going to the Gulf coast for years. I read in the book at
the house we rented that a few guests encountered a reef shark from time to
time, but I never saw one at all.
Since I'm not a fisherman, I didn't even attempt to go searching for lobster.
I with I had, but I'm just not that adventurous. I'm sure there are plenty of
locals that will help you out.
Driving on the left was fun, I thought. You do have to remind yourself
occasionally. I adapted pretty well in just one day. We only rented a car for
the first day we were there, and then mid-week so I didn't get a great deal of
experience. The biggest challenge you'll have is when it comes to turning.
You'll have to remind yourself to turn left DIRECTLY into the nearest lane.
You'll figure it out.
Bugs are really only a problem at night. I was frustrated by that becuase I
enjoy looking at the stars. It wound up being not a big problem becuase we had
clouds for the first half of our week, and then the moon made it too bright for
the second. Liberal use of bug spray, with DEET, will really take care of the
problem. We did run into a problem one day when we were out exploring, and had
to walk through a heavily wooded area to get to a beach, but it was an isolated
instance.
Crime was a non issue for us. Of course, we were VERY remote and secluded at
our house. Eluthera is a collection of "small towns", so everyone knows
everyone, and is very friendly.
Leaving the windows open at night will be more of an issue of temperature,
and bugs. If it's cool enough, and you have good screens, then I say go for it.
It was pretty hot this past week, so we took advantage of the A/C.
What house are you staying in? We drove around a little, and I might have
passed it and can give you more info.
Just remember, this isn't a "resort" type place. Any activity you or your
kids want to do, you'll have to come up with it yourself. If you have a car the
whole time, there's lots of different beaches to visit, in addition to the one
in front of your house. Again, my perspective was different, so we were looking
for something different.
I hope to hear from you.
