: Hi, Bill. I still haven't been able to send mail to you -- for some reason
AOL and my server don't work well together!
We're from Oklahoma and made our first trip to Eleuthera five
years ago and have visited annually ever since. Which home are you staying
at? If located on the Atlantic you'll have great lobster hunting just about
anywhere there is a reef. Most reefs are not far from shore. Sharks seem to
mainly come in on the Caribbean in the mornings and evenings but if you go
out too far, like my husband did once, he had a very close encounter on the
Atlantic side. He was approximately 1/4 mile from shore. The advice I've
always heard is stay out of the water before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m.
(my husband says 6:00 p.m.) Barracudas won't bother you and I've never seen
a jelly fish.
Drive on the left -- it does take some getting used to but you will
definitely want to rent a car. We have had the best luck renting from
Stanton Cooper.I can find his number but I think it is on eleu.net under car
rentals. The place to eat in the evenings is Tippy's. It is a great spot
with excellent food. It is located on what they call Banks Road between Gov
Harbour and Palmetto Point. Be advised that food is expensive so plan
accordingly! Also there is a deli (Pina?) in GHB that is a good place to
grab a bite for lunch. Be sure to shop for souveniers at Dornell's
Treasures just across the street from the deli. Island made gifts and
reasonable prices. I have made good friends with the manager, Brendalee,
please tell her "hello" from Michelle in Oklahoma! If you want to go out on
a boat fishing use Paul Petty. He is a great guy and great guide. I believe
his info can also be found on eleu.net however, you can probably just
contact him once you arrive to make arrangements. I would go ahead and make
you car rental reservations ahead of time.
You will want to visit the bakery in GHB to pick up French bread and
island-style pastries. The grocery store with the best variety is at the
nonworking stop light in GHB. It is just across the street from the police
station. Something you don't want to miss is the Friday night Fish Fry in
Gov. Harbour. It is so much fun and good island style food is served. It is
held at sundown on the beach next to the library. You will want to make a
day trip to Harbor Island to see the architecture, shop, and grab lunch.
There is a cute place just as you get off the ferry right on the water or
the Pink Sands Hotel has a nice restaurant overlooking the beach. Don't
waste your time going to Spanish Wells -- nice architecture but not much
going on there.
Crime is not prevalent so open windows should be okay. The only problem we
ever had was we had parked in a remote area to go snorkeling and someone
tried to break in the car. Just lock your doors when out.
The out islands are a whole new experience if you've never been. Normally
you are met at the airport by the caretaker of the home where you're
staying, all you have to do when you get off the plane is ask around for
him. Also, the person you are renting the car from will usually meet you at
the airport with the car -- same deal, just ask around for him!
Oh, be sure if you arrive on Saturday to do all your grocery shopping,
gather supplies, etc as most everything is closed on Sunday -- especially
restaurants. I do think the main grocery store in GHB is open for a few
hours around noon.
Let me know where you're staying -- we've probably stayed there!
Michelle
