Fresh red meat, especially of the quality you're used to in the states, can
be tough to find. The groceries in Governor's Harbour will have frozen
hamburger available, fresh pork, etc. It's not a bad idea to pack a cooler
with some fresh-frozen hamburger patties, steaks, chicken breasts, etc.
Staples like hot dogs, buns, bread, veggies, fruits, canned soups, pasta,
tomato sauces, etc., are readily available, as well as all the condiments
you'll need. (Don't waste precious packing space on mustard!)
Dairy products are expensive (actually, everything's expensive), and supplies
wax and wane depending on the boat-delivery schedules. (Things tend to run out
late in the week and over the weekend, get replenished Tues.-Weds.) If your
kids demand chocolate milk, might not be a bad idea to pack a big can of
Hershey's powder and mix it with milk from the store.
There are two modest grocery stores in Gov.'s Harbour, about 5 minutes from
where you're staying, and a pretty good one down at Rock Sound, about 40
minutes south. Sometimes we head down there the first day we're on the island
and stock up, then supplement with supplies from the closer stores.
You're also right down the road from the best restaurant around, "Tippy's."
And, if the kids need a midweek pizza fix, head down to Mate & Jenny's at
Palmetto Point.
Tho the locals tend to find the water in February too cold for swimming,
anybody who's used to dipping into the Atlantic off Maine won't be bothered at
all. Especially if you get some warm, sunny days.
Have fun,
dave
